The 4 Cs
— Learn —
The 4 Cs, in plain English.
Carat, color, clarity, cut. The four traits that determine a diamond's quality — and its price.
Cut
The most important one. A poorly cut diamond looks dull regardless of its other qualities. We only stock excellent and ideal cuts.
Color
Diamonds are graded D (colorless) through Z (light yellow). Most people can't tell the difference between D and H with the naked eye. We default to G–H — visually colorless, considerably less expensive than D–F.
Clarity
Internal flaws. Graded FL (flawless) through I3 (visible inclusions). VS1 or VS2 — clean to the eye, fairly priced — is our usual recommendation.
Carat
Weight, not size. A 1ct round looks bigger than a 1ct emerald cut. Shape matters as much as weight.
